We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled PhD candidate with a recent university MSc degree in chemistry, environmental/water sciences or related area. The candidates should be a result-driven team player and have good communication skills and good proficiency in English (both oral and written). He or she should have experience in wet lab work preferably work with soil, water and plant. Experience and proven background and expertise in lab work with HRMS and/or LC/MS or GC/MS is a must.

The provisional title of the PhD project is “Fate of xenobiotics in the agro- environment”

The successful candidates will: Be part of the EU funded ECORISK2050 project, which is an Innovative Training Network consisting of 8 beneficiaries and 12 PhD positions aiming to study the effects of global change on the emission, fate, effects and risks of chemicals in aquatic ecosystems.

Partners: Wageningen University and Utrecht University (The Netherlands), University of York (United Kingdom), University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Austria), The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (Norway), Stockholm University (Sweden), IMDEA Agua foundation (Spain).

PhD: Fate of xenobiotics in the agro-environment

The objectives of the PhD project are to study the fate (adsorption-desorption, transport and degradability) and plant uptake of active pharmaceuticals introduced to arable land via irrigation with treated wastewater and/or biosolids application. The study will be performed in lab to field scales in Israel at the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The expected results will improve our understanding about processes affecting the fate of pharmaceuticals and personal and home care products in the agricultural environment.
Local as well global aspects including human health risk are expected.

The most important rules are that applicants should not have a doctoral degree, should have obtained their MSc degree within the last four years and should not have spent more than 12 months of his/her time during the last 3 years in ISRAEL.

We offer a full-time position, initially for 6 months after which a go/no go decision will be taken on extension for another 9 months. Gross salary (before tax and fees) per month of 3,400 Euro. In addition to this amount you will receive a mobility allowance and, if relevant, a family allowance. Salary will be paid in local currency (IS).

Salary/scholarship for the rest of the PhD will be according to the budget possibility and the rules of the Hebrew U.
