במושבה רחובות, בלב איזור חקלאי מעובד אשר היה בבעלות תחנת הניסיונות התחילה סלילתו של שביל הפקולטה לחקלאות של האוניברסיטה העברית בהתאם לחזונם של מייסדי האוניברסיטה.
ראשיתו של השביל בתכנון בניין אהרן אהרונסון על ידי האדריכל הידוע אריך מנדלסון. הקמת הבניין הייתה לאבן הדרך הראשונה - פתיחת ה"מכון ללימודי החקלאות". טקס הפתיחה הרשמי נערך בנר ראשון של חנוכה התש“ג, 4 בדצמבר, 1942 במעמד קהל רב של אנשי מדע, מנהיגי הישוב היהודי בארץ, פקידי ממשלה בני משפחת אהרונסון ואורחים רבים.
במשעול צר ובתנאים חלוציים החלו בלימודים עשרים ואחד תלמידי המחזור הראשון במטרה לקדם את מדעי החקלאות ולהתאימם לתנאי הארץ. התרחבות השביל נאלצה להמתין לימים רגועים שהגיעו עם תום מלחמת העצמאות. בשנת 1952 החליטה האוניברסיטה העברית על הפיכת ה"מכון ללימודי החקלאות" ל"פקולטה" ומאז הולך השביל ומתרחב לדרך, דרכה של הפקולטה לחקלאות, מזון וסביבה. המשכה של דרך זו נותן מענה לצרכי חקלאות ישראל, והפקולטה משלבת מחקרים מן השורה הראשונה בחקלאות מודרנית אשר יצרה לעצמה מוניטין בין לאומי. טביעות רגליהם של מורי הפקולטה, חוקריה, עובדיה ותלמידיה לדורותיהם ממשיכות לפלס את הדרך לקראת יעדים חדשים.
In the Moshava of Rehovot, in the heart of an agricultural area owned by the experimental station, milestones were set for the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University, according to the vision of the founders of the University.
The first milestone was the planning of the Aharon Aharonson building by the famous architect Erich Mendelsohn. This first building enabled the opening the Institute for Agricultural Studies. The official opening was celebrated with the lighting of the first Chanukah candle, on December 4th, 1942, in the presence of a large crowd of scientists, leaders of the Jewish Yishuv, government officials, members of the Ahronson family and many other guests.
Under pioneering conditions, the twenty-one students of the first class commenced their studies with the aim of advancing the agricultural sciences and adapting them to the conditions in Israel. In 1952 the Hebrew University of Jerusalem decided to turn the Institute into a Faculty and ever since, it has grown into what it is today, the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment.
